Years back, Randy Sparks explained how singer-songwriter John Deutschendorf famously changed his name: “‘Denver’ [by The New Christy Minstrels] was the first song I had sheet music done for. I looked up and said, ‘What about John Denver?’ He said, ‘No, it’s too close to Bob Denver’ (the title character on television’s GILLIGAN’S ISLAND). I said, ‘Young man, if you play your cards right, nobody will remember Bob Denver.’ And that’s the way it worked out.”
